![]() Having all of my suggestions laid out in front of me makes it easier to find, replace, and add things to my writing piece.”Ĥ) Grade the final draft only on whether students worked hard to address all my comments. I also find they often put more effort into responding to a Google comment than a written one.Īs one student wrote in an anonymous survey this spring about responding to my online comments, “Getting comments on Google Docs makes it not only easier to find where you need to fix your mistakes but also gives the teacher more space to write about what they’d like you to change. It makes my comments easier to read, and students say they enjoy responding to comments more onscreen than transitioning from paper to screen. Like many of us, I try to grade electronically whenever possible now. Download the peer response guidelines.ģ) Comment on the rough drafts myself, ideally in Google Docs, and then require students to address all comments for the final draft. Sometimes I’ll include questions that ask about coherence of argument, but mostly I’m asking kids to help each other double-check the details. One of the best tricks I’ve learned in recent years is to make peer response more like a checklist, less like editing. Download the organizer and the model paragraph here.Ģ) Make sure the peer response criteria for the rough drafts correlate with the outline organizer. By the time they finished, they were effectively done with their rough draft. This organizer took several days for most students to complete in class. To accomplish this scheme, here are the four steps I implemented that made me feel, for the first time, that these research papers were a process, not a fait accompli: that I was actually helping rather than simply grading my students.ġ) Create an excruciatingly detailed outline organizer that students can use while constructing their papers. What if I could then write copious comments on the rough drafts and ask students to incorporate changes into the final?Īnd – best of all – what if I barely graded the final drafts, since all the of the meaningful work would have happened before that? Four Steps that Keep Me Sane ![]() What if I could give students enough scaffolding, through an outline organizer and accompanying peer response, that their rough drafts included everything I wanted? In my lesson plan file I wrote, in huge red font so I wouldn’t ignore it: “Do whatever it takes for this not to happen in the future!” Grading them while sitting next to a hotel pool on spring break made me want to toss them into the water. These papers were not long – about two pages, double spaced – but they felt like it. Vague words such as bad, good, great, and sad carried the day. Quotations were not always embedded well, and facts were not sufficiently paraphrased. A lofty topic sentence bore little relation to the evidence within the paragraph. Yet the writing in many instances simply didn’t gel. The papers were well sourced, and many of them had strong thesis statements because we had worked on them in class together. history research papers and realized that if I wanted to be teaching writing in history class – which I very much did – this was not the way to do it. The final tipping point in convincing me to read rough drafts came more recently than I’d like to admit, when I yet again dug into a set of final eighth-grade U.S. So, what I’ve ended up doing in recent years with research papers is to grade rough drafts deeply, grade final drafts hardly at all – and, crucially, structure the writing so that rough drafts become something I actually want to read. This is not a zero-sum game: It’s actually negative when you look at the wear and tear on us as teachers. Little learning on the part of the student. Lots of effort on the part of the teacher. Because, unless we ask students to do corrections or respond to our comments, the comments we make will – as we well know – disappear into the ether, never to be recovered. In fact, giving comments only on final drafts can actually be worse than giving them on rough drafts. I might have continued this dance of avoidance indefinitely, until I realized (a little late to the game): If students don’t receive and process meaningful comments on rough drafts, whether from me or their peer responders or both, their final papers will read like rough drafts. I envisioned slogging through paper after paper, then having to trudge through them all again, like trampling on dirty snow.Įarlier in my career, I actually did do that slog, for nobility’s sake, and later thought: No way. I thought I didn’t have time – and that if I commented on the rough drafts I would be doubling my paper load. ![]() For many years, with major writing assignments, I avoided reading my students’ rough drafts.

Some distributors offer Apple Digital Masters (formerly Mastered For iTunes) versions of releases. Apple Digital Mastersįile Format: 24-bit/96k, 88.2k, 48k, or 44.1k Sample Rate WAV Files This is why it’s important that you’re submitting true WAV files that have never been reduced to mp3/AAC/m4a or other low quality formats.ĭistroKid now offers an option for independent bands/artists to have their album available as MQA. As high resolution and lossless streaming from Apple Music, Amazon, and others becomes the norm, I think MQA will slowly fade away. Usually the most obvious issue is swirly and garbled sounding high frequencies. ![]() Even if the mp3 (or AAC/m4a) file that you submit sounds OK, it will surely sound bad after it’s reduced in quality again (known as transcoding) by the streaming service or digital retailer. One concerning thing about DistroKid is that they also accept mp3 files as masters, which is not good. I personally think we’re at a point where it is safe in most cases to upload sample rates higher than 44.1k if available which aside from likely sounding better when streamed in mp3/lossy formats, also means your project will be available to stream in high resolution for those who want to, if their streaming service of choice offers it. Others do not trust streaming services to properly downsample the audio when needed and argue that submitting 16 or 24-bit/44.1k WAV is best, or at least safest because the mastering engineer will have ideally used the best sounding sample rate conversion they have available. There is no need to reduce to 44.1k just for digital distribution anymore. If you are self-mastering, this doesn’t mean you should export your master files at the highest sample rate your DAW/audio software allows (usually 192k), this means you should simply keep the audio at the same sample rate as the recording, mixing, and mastering session if it’s higher than 44.1k. However, as lossless and high resolution streaming is becoming more common, those who are serious about audio fidelity may want to upload the highest sample rate master WAV files they have available from the mastering session. There is no way to make a blanket statement about whether this is good or bad because it will vary from service to service depending on the software and practices used to do that. Just be aware that if you do submit higher sample rate WAV files, in some cases, the audio will be reduced to 44.1k sample rate by the streaming service. The old standard of -0.2dB peak headroom from the CD era is usually not enough to prevent potential issues downstream. Be aware that if ample peak-headroom is not present on these WAV masters, you may experience clipping or overs when the masters are converted from WAV to AAC, mp3, and other data-compressed formats used by most online stores and streaming services. These files will be submitted to an aggregator (distributor) such as DistroKid, CD Baby or Tunecore, to distribute your music to a variety of online stores and streaming services of your choice. If changes are needed, it’s always best to contact whoever did the mastering so these changes can be made from the best possible source, and checked again for quality and accuracy before being uploaded. ![]() ![]() They should not be altered in any way after being reduced to 24 or 16-bit and should be ready for distribution “as is”. Master WAV files should come directly from the mastering session, and should have never been on an audio CD or in mp3 format. They should all have their file specifications listed on their website but nearly all of them now accept 24-bit/44.1k (or higher) sample rates which is great. There are a growing number of smaller boutique distributors/aggregators as well, too many to keep track of. Other than CD Baby, the rest of the main digital distributors such as DistroKid, The Orchard, and TuneCore all accept 24-bit WAV files, and they can be higher sample rate files than 44.1k if available from the mastering session. The rest of the digital distributors/aggregators now accept higher resolution files which is great, especially as streaming services are starting to offer lossless and high resolution streaming. I first wrote this article in 2014 and as of 2021, I can now say that there is really only one main digital distributor that still has an arbitrary limitation of 16-bit/44.1k WAV files, and that is CD Baby. Apple Music/iTunes Store, Spotify, Amazon HD, TIDAL, and Other Online Stores/Streaming Servicesįile Format: 24-bit/44.1k Sample Rate (or higher) WAV Files This is an overview of master audio file formats you’ll need depending on how you plan to release and distribute your music, and how well you want to optimize your audio for a given format. ![]() The old entries remain in the file, but only the newest can be found in Passwords. I am on Tails, I have saved the database on the persistent partition (Trying to use the volume on a non persistent folder does not solve the issue), doing 'sudo apt update' and 'sudo apt upgrade' did not solve the issue. Only the newest entry remains in the database KeepassXC might work fine with this scaling but it could break other programs. Anyway thanks for this wonderful program The Qt environment variable changes the scaling for all programs which use Qt renderer. Basically what happens is that when I open the database (stored in the persistent partition) and I add a new entry, after saving KeePassXC will create a backup of the database () that contains the entries as they are expected, but in the Password.kdbx database the old entries get deleted, while only the newly created entry before saving remains.īoth the new and the old entries are in the database an appropriate menu for this configuration will be much better. Having the browser plugin make this easier would be a godsend, as website logins are one of the "sore points" for a lot of KeepassXC (and Keepass) users, as they have always had some issues.I am using the version of KeePassXC included in the last version of Tails (updating it did not fix the issue). Usage: keepassxcpwned OPTIONS DATABASE Check a keepassxc database against previously cracked haveibeenpwned passwords Options: -p, -plaintext Print breached passwords in plaintext defaults to sha1 hashes. However, this is tedious, and involves leaving the browser to use the application, then switching back to the browser. ![]() This functionality can already technically be gained by going to the main keepassxc program, finding the entry, and either using auto-type or copying the username/password manually. We are committed to continually improve KeePassXC through customer experience and your feedback is important to us. Here is a really terribly mock up of what this might look like: Overview I had configured 2FA TOTP in KeePass, but when I open the database in KeePassXC, the TOTP configuration is not recognized. The bitbucket website () has this problem. Even if I wanted to manually copy all the secrets into KeePassXCs format, I cannot find a way to easily discover all entries with TimeOtp-Secret-Base32 fields. These would serve as an easy "just in case" method for websites that don't want to work. These would use KeepassXC's built-in copy systems (meaning the clipboard will be cleared etc after a certain time limit, and other security measures as well). The best solution I can think of to remedy this (and any other possible cases of non-detection of fields) is to add a "Copy Username" and "Copy Password" button to the drop-down options menu of the browser plugin. KeePassXC is a cross-platform community-driven port of the Windows application Keepass Password Safe. I find KeepassXC often has trouble detecting these, even when manually specifying fields.
